Smoothies

Many doctors specializing in liver function recommend raw juices.  The reaction from appliance vendors was to step up promotion of juicers, but most people actually into healthy eating prefer smoothies.  Juicers remove vegetable solids that maybe the liver doesn't deal with much, but the rest of the digestive system does.  Improving your digestion is as important to weight loss as improving liver function, so here are some tips on smoothies.

Smoothies can be made sweet or neutral.  Most of the time when people think of smoothies, they think of something sweet, but a smoothie can also be like a salad in a cup.  In the hot summer, especially if you live without air conditioning, sometimes a smoothie is a welcome shot of calories when you're hungry but the idea of warm or solid food makes you want to wretch.

A trick middle eastern juice and smoothie bar vendors use to give a little extra sweetness to their product is reconstituted dates.  You can also use raisins or prunes for this.  Just soak them in water until they're very soft, and add them to your smoothie recipe.  Stevia also adds sweetness without the calories.
